Born in Munich. He is a journalist, working for one of Germany’s largest regional newspapers. Since 1978 he has regularly traveled to Mexico, especially to the Maya area. His mayor interest is the regional Puuc culture. Since 2002 and until 2009 he has been working on a special project: An inventory of still standing Puuc architecture in a specific 100 km2 area in the northeastern part of the State of Campeche. A publication entitled “The Long Silence - Sabana Piletas and its Neighbors: An Architectural Survey of Maya Ruins in Northeastern Campeche, Mexico” is the results of these efforts and will be published by Anton Sauerwein’s editorial company in 2010. Merk has published numerous articles about Maya ruins mexicon, a well-known scientific journal.
